FAYETTE COUNTY — A 23-year-old man reportedly took his life Friday afternoon following a police pursuit in Fayette County.

According to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office, law enforcement responded Friday afternoon to a call from the man’s family members who were concerned for his safety and well being due to statements he had made.

The Fayette County Sheriff reports that he, Vandalia police and St. Elmo police were all involved in a pursuit of the man Friday afternoon in Brownstown that continued into St. Elmo and then back to the east side of Brownstown where the pursuit ended.

A short time later the Fayette County Coroner’s Office pronounced the man dead at Fayette County Hospital due to self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

An autopsy was performed Saturday at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, which confirmed the wounds were consistent with a self-inflicted injury.

According to sheriff’s reports, during Friday’s pursuit, two squad cars–the sheriff’s and one from St. Elmo PD–received damage. The sheriff and the St. Elmo officer both went to Fayette County Hospital for treatment and were released.

The man’s identity has not been released.
