FAYETTE COUNTY — A 46-year-old Canadian semi driver was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 70 in Fayette County.

According to Illinois State Police, at about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday Peter F. Peters, of Elmira, Ontario, was parked on the right shoulder of eastbound I-70 near mile marker 55.

He was standing at about the mid-point of the flatbed trailer when the driver of another semi and trailer sideswiped him.

Police say Peters was “pinched” between the two trailers. He died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the other tractor-trailer left the scene, heading east. The crash resulted in I-70 eastbound being closed for several hours Thursday morning as police investigated the scene.The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
