According to Coroner Troy Cannon, Shane Farris, of Collinsville, was reportedly working in the kitchen area when he came in contact with an apparently faulty piece of equipment and received a fatal electrical shock during the morning hours of Thursday.

Prison staff and EMS attempted to resuscitate Farris, but he was eventually declared deceased in the Emergency Room of St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.

An autopsy scheduled for Friday afternoon will presumably confirm the electrical shock to Farris’ body. No foul play is suspected nor indicated at this time.

Cannon says the CSI Unit of the Illinois State Police and Investigators from the Illinois Department of Corrections Internal Affairs are assisting with the investigation.
