According to Centralia Police Chief Brian Atchison, around 1:30 Tuesday morning, Centralia and Wamac police spotted Nathan C. Johnson in a vehicle reported to have been involved in a shooting and vehicle pursuit in DuQuoin.

Atchson says the suspect vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 51, north of Irvington at a high rate of speed, before turning onto Walnut Hill Road, in Washington County.

Johnson then turned into his driveway on Irvington Road and stopped. He then reportedly fired at officers from a considerable distance, striking one Centralia police squad car.

Officers and deputies from Washington, Jefferson, Clinton and Marion counties, Illinois State Police and Central City all assisted on scene.

Police initiated phone contact with the suspect and after lengthy conversations he surrendered to police at about 4:30 a.m.without incident. No shots were fired by police in this incident and no one was injured.

Due to the case involving multiple jurisdictions and counties it’s being investigated by the Illinois State Police. Johnson was charged Tuesday afternoon in Washington County with Class X aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer or firefighter.
