FAYETTE COUNTY — The jury trial of a 25-year-old St. Peter man in Fayette County court had been on track until Wednesday, when the January 14 date was vacated and a new date rest for the summer.

Alexander Beccue is charged with two counts first-degree murder, Class 2 felony possession of a stolen vehicle, and Class 3 felony being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Beccue shot Joshua Smith of Ramsey in the head on Aug. 11, 2017, in Fayette County. Smith later died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

In November, the defense filed a motion to suppress statements in the case and a hearing on that motion was scheduled for Wednesday. At that same November setting the court notified the defense counsel that questionnaires for a January jury trial were needed as soon as possible for a January 14, 2019, jury trial.

However, the case changed direction with the Monday jury trial date being vacated and reset to June 17. An all-day hearing on the defense motion to suppress statements has now been scheduled for March 6.

Beccue faces life in prison if convicted.
