UPDATE: Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says the suspicious object at the Grassy General Store has been determined to be a misplaced inert training device. The object has been collected as evidence and the investigation into how the device became misplaced will continue.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY — The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious object at Grassy General Store in Carbondale.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report at about 6:43 p.m. of an object that appeared to be some type of explosive device at the business.

Williamson County Deputies responded. After a brief investigation assistance was requested from the Carbondale PD/SIU PD Bomb Disposal Unit.

Appropriate evacuations and safety measures have been put in place.

The Illinois State Police, Lake of Egypt Fire Department, Illinois Secretary of State’s Bomb Disposal Unit, and Williamson County Fire Protection District are also assisting with the call.

No additional information will be released tonight.
