SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — Illinois State Police officials responded to multiple crashes in our area early Tuesday morning, including a fatal crash on Interstate 64 in Jefferson County.

Around 5:39 a.m. Tuesday, 30-year-old Thakur Kafley, of Kentucky was driving his semi westbound on I-64 just west of Mt. Vernon when he veered off the road and sideswiped a disabled car on the shoulder of the road.

The truck continued off the road until it hit a tree. Kafley was killed in the crash. The driver of the disabled car, 37-year-old Eric Daniels of Mt. Vernon, escaped injury.

Police said traffic returned to its regular flow shortly after 9 a.m.

Another crash took place in southbound lanes of Interstate 57 around mile post 46 in Williamson CountyTuesday morning as well. It happened around 5:15 a.m.

Two semi trucks were involved and one driver was stuck inside their vehicle according state police.

Police said the driver’s injuries did not seem life threatening.
