Centralia awarded $250k sewer grant from DCEO

Cwater sewer systemENTRALIA — Mayor Tom Ashby has announced that the City of Centralia has been awarded a $250,000 sewer grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO).

This $250,000 grant, coupled with the $1 million  previous sewer grant the City received in 2012, will enable the City to complete a major public infrastructure project with grant dollars rather than by increasing bonds that would have made a sewer rate increase necessary.

City Manager, Dan Ramey states that with the monies from the grant the city will be able to complete the main sewer transmission line project from 7th and Cherry to the sewer plant on 17th Street.

Improvements will include interconnection of 12-inch, 24-inch, 48-inch and 84-inch sewer lines, manholes and treatment plant influent piping with a diversion structure at the sewer plant.

Ramey stated this final phase of construction of increasing the size of sewer lines installed will increase capacity from the city to the sewer plant and will help with reducing sewer back-up problems that have plagued the city for decades and feels the sewer project can be completed by June 2015.
