Coroner declares weekend deaths of husband and wife murder/suicide

MARION — Counselors available Monday at a southern Illinois elementary school, as students, faculty and staff try to come to terms with the murder of one of the school’s teachers.

Williamson County authorities say 43-year-old Amy Smith Blaise, a special education teacher at Jonesboro Elementary, was killed Friday night by her husband, 42-year-old Daniel Blaise, who then took his own life.

Autopsies are complete and the Williamson County coroner says Amy Smith Blaise died as the result of a single gunshot wound and her death has been ruled a homicide. Daniel Blaise died as the result of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation indicated the Daniel Blaise fired multiple rounds inside the residence, before firing a round that struck Amy Smith Blaise.

One of the couple’s three children was inside the residence during the incident. The child was not physically injured.
