Two Mt. Vernon women sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in burglary incident

JEFFERSON COUNTY — Two Mt. Vernon women have been sentenced in Jefferson County court to prison, for their roles in the burglary of a Mt. Vernon convenience store.

According to the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office, 57-year-old Cynthia Hamilton, pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing burglary tools and was sentenced to 3-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Hamilton was arrested October 26, 2014, in connection with the previous week’s robbery of the Casey’s General Store in Mt. Vernon.

A 46-year-old clerk from the store was also arrested in connection with the burglary. Anita Bailey pleaded guilty to a charge of filing a false police report and has been sentenced to 2-years in prison.

On September 4, 2014, Bailey reported being the victim of a robbery at the store. After an investigation it was determined her report was false. She had initially told police that a white man wearing a neon yellow shirt and riding a bicycle was suspected in the robbery.

She claimed the man took the bank bag from her and fled on the bicycle.

Upon investigation by the MVPD Detective Division, the suspect with long hair seen in previously released surveillance photos was identified. He cooperated fully with the investigation and has reportedly been exonerated of any wrong doing.
