During a recent Rend Lake Water Conservancy District meeting, the water contract with Mt. Vernon was brought up. Officials say the contract the district has with Mt. Vernon is non-assignable.
That means the district doesn’t have to continue selling water to Mt. Vernon if the sale goes through. Another point that was mentioned was the district shouldn’t just end its contract because it would need a good reason to end the agreement.
The district could open negotiations about the contract with Illinois American Water and see what happens. The district sells water to Mt. Vernon at a rate of $8.40 per 5,000 gallons. With sewage and trash fees included, the city sells the water for $80 per $5,000 gallons.
The City of Mt. Vernon is holding a workshop at 3 p.m. Monday at the Roland Lewis Building to discuss further with the public the possible sale of the sewer and water system to Illinois American Water.
