FAYETTE COUNTY — Vandalia police are reporting a pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday afternoon by a freight train traveling through Vandalia.

The incident, which remains under investigation, happened just after 4 p.m. Sunday at Eighth and Main streets in Vandalia.

The identity of the pedestrian has not yet been released. But in addition to the Vandalia Police Department, the Vandalia Fire Department, Fayette County Sheriffs Office, Fayette County Corner Bruce Bowen and the Illinois State Police all assisted at the scene.

This is the second fatal train incident in Vandalia in less than a year. In October, a mother and three of her children were struck and killed when their SUV was attempting to cross the tracks at Sixth and Main streets — just a few blocks away from Sunday’s fatal incident.
