FAYETTE COUNTY — Vandalia police are reporting a 71-year-old Vandalia pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday afternoon by a train traveling through Vandalia.

According to police, David Waltz, was killed around 4 p.m. Sunday, when he was walking near the railroad tracks at Eighth and Main streets in Vandalia when he was struck and killed by a freight train.

The incident remains under investigation. in addition to the Vandalia Police Department, the Vandalia Fire Department, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County Corner Bruce Bowen and the Illinois State Police all assisted at the scene.

This is the second fatal train incident in Vandalia in less than a year. In October, a mother and three of her children were struck and killed when their SUV was attempting to cross the tracks at Sixth and Main streets — just a few blocks away from Sunday’s fatal incident.
