CHICAGO (AP) — A legal fight is shaping up over whether the state of Illinois will have to produce any documents showing how permits were awarded in the medical marijuana industry.

Alice Keane of the Illinois Attorney General’s office said in court Monday the state’s medical marijuana law makes it a misdemeanor to breach its confidentiality requirements.

Keane says she would want Cook County Judge Kathleen Kennedy to explicitly order the production of documents if the judge doesn’t dismiss the lawsuit first.

A company called PM Rx claims the Illinois Department of Agriculture broke its own rules when awarding permits to cultivation centers. Lawyers for PM Rx have requested numerous documents about the application process, some focusing on whether background checks were properly conducted.

The next hearing is set for April 1.
