BROOKLYN, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois village police chief is gone from the job after a recent raid by state and county officers.
Illinois State Police and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office seized a cache of weapons, computers and documents from the Brooklyn Police Department last Wednesday.
On Monday, village officials said Brooklyn Police Chief Steve Mitchell was no longer employed. A police sergeant referred additional questions to Brooklyn’s mayor, who could not be immediately reached.
In a related move, St. Clair prosecutor Brendan Kelly is declining to prosecute any cases handled by Brooklyn officer Christopher Heatherly, a former Wamac police officer, who allegedly took an illegal assault rifle from the department’s evidence vault.
Kelly also won’t prosecute cases involving another Brooklyn officer with a relative whose towing firm assists village police in generating revenue from towing fees.
