Illinois Republicans at the state and federal level don’t agree with Indiana’s religious freedom law.
U.S. Sen. Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) doesn’t have anything nice to say about Indiana’s law, which he fears will allow businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians.
“We should not enshrine bigotry (under) the cover of religion,” Kirk said. “It’s not just bad practice, it’s basically un-American, I would say.”
Defenders of the law claim Illinois has a similar statute, but it similar in title only, not in contents. Illinois also has the 2006 Illinois Human Rights Act, which specifically prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. Gov. Bruce Rauner says Indiana’s law doesn’t offer those protections, which he finds troubling.
“I believe that it may open the door for some discriminatory behavior, and that would be bad,” Rauner said.
When asked if Illinois could benefit from businesses threatening to leave Indiana, Rauner said his legislative agenda will do more to attract businesses from other states.
