WHITE COUNTY — The White County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting, that sent a Grayville man to the hospital.
According to the sheriff’s office, a Grayville police officer, Jess A. Burley, shot a person once at the Dollar General Store after working a traffic violation call.
Sheriff Doug Maier says the suspect, 48-year-old John Eagleson, has been taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound in the face.
He says Eagleson was attempting to flee when officer Burley stepped in front of his car. That’s when Burley fired one shot through the front windshield because he was afraid Eagleson was going to try to run him over.
Sheriff Maier says after speaking with Eagleson’s family he heard the bullet went through Eagleson’s cheek and lodged into his shoulder. He is stable and at Deaconess Hospital.
Officer Burley was not injured by the vehicle, but was taken to the hospital to be treated for stress.
Maier says his office and the Illinois State Police are investigating this incident to the fullest.
