SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner’s top budget aide says more grants could be suspended this year on top of tens of millions in suspensions sent to nonprofits earlier this month.

Office of Management and Budget Director Tim Nuding defended the proposed suspension of $26 million in grants managed by the state health and human services departments after attacks from Senate Democrats during Tuesday’s joint appropriations committee meeting.

Nuding says a budget deal passed by lawmakers and signed by Rauner in March to plug a $1.6 billion gap in the current budget doesn’t go far enough to close the hole.

The budget chief says reviews of the state’s major agencies already have been completed. He says appropriation limits set by the budget deal would determine where possible future funding suspensions could occur.
