Ralph Larnie Winegarner

SALEM — Ralph Larnie Winegarner, 78, of Salem, passed away at 10:42 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at his home in Salem.

Mr. Winegarner is survived by his daughters, Debbie Happli and husband Andrew, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Donna Winegarner, of Arizona; sisters, Leona Seidel of Mountain View, NM, Grace Elwell, of Wilmington, and Margie McMcIntyre-Thompson, of Greenville; grandchildren Nathaniel Simpson, Daniel Simpson, Naomi Lyles, and David Happli; and one great-grandchild Emma Leigh Simpson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Memerie (Montfort) Winegarner of Salem, on March 26, 2014; his sister, Vera Stumborg, of Effingham; his mother, Martha Winegarner of Arizona; his granddaughter, Bethany Marissa Simpson, of Louisiana; and his father, Marvin Winegarner, of Salem.

He was born on February 4, 1937 in Salem, the son of Marvin Henry and Martha (Mc Daneld) Winegarner. Ralph married Memerie Duncan (Montfort) Winegarner on November 23, 1962 in Mt. Vernon.

He was a graduate of Salem High School, and received a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Master’s in Physics from Princeton University. He served in the United States Army, Special Forces, as a Green Beret, and was a Master Sargent. He was retired from General Electric.

He was a dedicated and loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was an accomplished organist and pianist, and a world traveler. He enjoyed numerous intellectual pursuits, and was passionate about his work and life. He was an unceasing optimist, an inspiration, and a source of strength to those who knew him.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Irvin Funeral Home in Odin. Interment will follow at Harvey’s Point Church Cemetery in Kell.

Friends may call from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, and are asked to meet at the funeral home.
