SALEM — Salem Community High School Superintendent Brad Detering denies an online claim that SCHS students are prohibited from bringing a same sex date to prom, and says same-sex dates have already attended both prom and homecoming at the school.

A Salem mother brought concerns to us regarding what she said is a practice at the high school that prohibits students from bringing a same sex date to prom. She has also made that same claim on social media online.

However, Detering assures us that is not the case, and states that no one in the school’s administration has told any student that they could not attend the festivities as part of a same-sex couple.

According to Detering, female students have attended prom together for years, and while many were probably just friends and not a couple, the school does not ask students the status of their relationship.
