BENTON — A 34-year-old Carbondale man has been charged in federal court with intent to distribute cocaine in Jackson County.

Ryan L. Gibbs, a/k/a “Blood,” 34, has been charged by indictment with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced Monday.

The offense is alleged to have occurred on Sept. 16, 2014, in Jackson County. Gibbs made his initial appearance in federal court on May 4, 2015. He was ordered held without bond, pending a July 6, 2015, jury trial.

The cocaine offense carries a penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison, to be followed by 3 years’ supervised release, and a fine of $1 million.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Southern Illinois Enforcement Group, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Carbondale Police Department, and the Illinois Department of Corrections. The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office also assisted in the investigation.

The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Amanda A. Robertson for prosecution.
