New leaders were sworn in Monday night on both Salem and Mt. Vernon city councils.

In Salem, new mayor Rex Barbee was sworn in, taking over the reigns for former mayor John Raymer, who didn’t seek reelection.

Salem also received two new council members, with Nic Farley and Craig Morton being sworn in to replace Royce Bringwald — who did not seek reelection, and Dave Black, who was unseated after 36-years on the council.

In Mt. Vernon, Donte Moore and Jeff May were sworn in, replacing councilmen Ron Lash and David Wood, neither of whom ran for reelection.

The pair promised that they will promote a more transparent city government.  Moore even says that he’s open to getting calls at home from the people he represents.  May says that he’s concerned about the previous city council’s plans to sell the city’s water and sewer systems.
