Five arrested in connection with weekend stabbings

WEST FRANKFORT — Five people — including two from Vandalia — have been arrested in connection with a weekend incident in West Frankfort that sent two people to the hospital with numerous stab wounds.

According to police, husband and wife Logan and Kelsey Leigh Ann Cook, 22 and 23, both of Vandalia; along with 23-year-old Chance E. Pauls, and 21-year-old Seth W. Murphy, both of West Frankfort; and 23-year-old Cody W. Grove, of Mulkeytown, were all taken into custody Tuesday on aggravated battery charges.

West Frankfort Police Chief Shawn Talluto says officers responded just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday to report of a fight at a home in the 1600 block of West Road in West Frankfort.

Talluto said two people at the home — 39-year-old Eric D. Hayes, and 27-year-old Renee A. Stilley — suffered “numerous stab wounds” and were flown to hospitals in St. Louis for treatment.

Police reports indicate the victims and those arrested had been in a fight earlier in the evening at a local bar and the fight then moved to the residence on West Road.

The suspect vehicle was recovered and Crime Scene Investigators processed the vehicle as well as the crime scene on West Road.

The case is still under investigation.
