MOUNT VERNON — A 24-year-old Opdyke man is in jail, charged with an incident earlier this month that landed his child in the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, the victim of suspected child abuse.

Gilbert L. Heck was arrested Friday following an investigation into a May 2, 2015 report from Cardinal Glennon regarding a suspected case of child abuse. Mt Vernon Police Detectives and Investigators from the Division of Child and Family Services began to investigate the report.

As a result of the investigation, Heck was taken into custody and charged with two counts Class X felony aggravated battery to a child resulting in permanent disability, two counts Class 2 felony aggravated domestic battery, and one count Class 3 felony aggravated battery to a child.

Heck is being held in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bail set at $200,000. The baby remains hospitalized.
