SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois lawmakers have delivered some sweet news for fans of pumpkin pie and corn.

Measures designating pumpkin as the official state pie and sweet corn as the state vegetable are headed to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk.

Republican state Rep. Keith Sommer of Morton is sponsoring the pie proposal. He has said the bill is a tribute to how much pumpkin Illinois produces.

Sommer has said it’s important to recognize “the good things of the state of Illinois” while leaders grapple with more serious business, including an expected $6 billion budget hole come July.

Plainview Republican Sen. Sam McCann is the sponsor of the veggie legislation, which was the idea of an elementary school class.
