SPRINGFIELD (AP) — A group of freshmen Republican legislators is pushing for term limits, saying gridlock in the Illinois Legislature is a sign the status quo isn’t working.

The lawmakers held a news conference Wednesday to rail on the “entrenched leadership” in Springfield.

Rep. Steve Andersson of Geneva is one of three GOP legislators who’ve introduced legislation to limit the amount of time legislators and statewide officials may serve.

He says “the time is now” to debate the issue, but Democrats who control the Legislature won’t allow it.

Critics of term limits say voters should decide when a lawmaker’s time in office is up. They say limiting lawmakers can mean losing valuable experience and expertise.

None of the 11 lawmakers at the news conference said they’re voluntarily limiting their own time in office.
