With the busy summer travel season beginning this holiday weekend, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) was joined today by the Illinois State Police (ISP) and more than 350 local law enforcement agencies to remind motorists that they will be out in force, working around the clock to keep Illinois roads safe through Memorial Day.

Throughout the holiday weekend, Illinois motorists will see hundreds of seat belt enforcement zones and other enforcement patrols looking for seat belt law violators and impaired drivers as part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, 43 percent of people that were killed in fatal crashes last year didn’t wear a seat belt.

It makes up just one of what officers call the “fatal four.”

Distracted driving, seat belt usage, speeding and DUI, those are the four major things that kill the most people in Illinois, according to ISP.

The Mt Vernon Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, along with other law enforcement agencies across Illinois, will be conducting roadside checkpoints on Saturday. The checkpoints will be focusing on removing alcohol impaired drivers from the roadway.
