Mother arrested for false report of missing Mt. Vernon child

MOUNT VERNON — A missing child report yesterday in Mt. Vernon has led to the arrest of the child’s mother on charges of filing a false report.

Around 2:45 Monday afternoon, the Mt Vernon Police Department received information reporting a 7- year-old female was missing from a residence in the 900 block of South 12th in Mt Vernon. Patrol units responded to the area and confirmed the report with the mother of the child, Sheree Williams.

Mt Vernon Patrol Officers, Mt Vernon Police Detectives, and Litton’s Ambulance personnel responded to the area and began searching for the child.

Additionally, an information release was posted on the Mt Vernon Police Facebook page and the “A Child is Missing” agency was notified to begin phoning the area and notifying residents. Hundreds of people shared the missing child alert from the WILY and WRXX Facebook pages, before the child was located and the notification pulled.

While investigating the report, detectives learned the child was located at a residence in the 600 block of South 17th. The child had been dropped off there by Williams prior to making the false report to the police.

Sheree Williams was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct – Making a False Police Report and Child Endangerment. Williams is incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set. The Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has been notified.
