MARION COUNTY — Residents in Patoka came to aid of a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy Monday, locating and securing a 42-year-old male subject who reportedly had earlier fled from a deputy attempting to stop him on multiple charges.

David Howell, of Mahomet, was ultimately arrested for alleged aggravated fleeing and eluding police, as well as driving while license suspended.

Howell was initially being sought after an incident at Carlyle Lake, where he reportedly threatened to kill a woman and her family, then left the area in the woman’s vehicle.

After the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department informed them of the incident at the lake, Marion County Sheriff’s deputies performed a well-being check at the woman’s home, only to return a short time later when Howell had reportedly showed up and was banging on the door.

It was as deputies were returning to the Patoka home that a deputy spotted the vehicle Howell was believed driving, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. But when the deputy activated his lights, Howell left at a high rate of speed, nearly striking a motorcycle in the process.

Because they were in a residential area, deputies called off the chase, only to be notified that Howell was seen near the Patoka Park.

Just as deputies were preparing the area for a K-9 search of the area, residents located Howell and held him until deputies arrived.
