Elderly woman killed when struck by semi at I-57 rest stop

FRANKLIN COUNTY — An accident late Wednesday afternoon in Franklin County involving a semi and a pedestrian resulted in the death of a 72-year-old woman from Spokane Valley, Wash., as she walked across the parking lot of an interstate rest stop.
Police say around 4:55 p.m. on I-57 near mile marker 73, the woman was walking across the parking lot of the rest area when she was struck by a semi driven by 73-year-old William Lorentz, of Alberta, Canada. Lorentz was entering the semi parking area of the rest area when the accident took place.
The woman was taken to Franklin County Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld pending family notification.
