URBANA — May was wetter and warmer than average in Illinois, despite a shivery finale.

Illinois state climatologist Jim Angel says that, statewide, the temperature for the month was 2.3 degrees above average.

He works at the Illinois State Water Survey at the University of Illinois.

Angel says statewide rainfall last month was an inch above average. He says an average 5.6 inches of rain fell in Illinois in last month, making it the 22nd wettest May on record.

He says some of the heaviest rainfalls were in northwest Illinois and just southeast of St. Louis. The highest localized total for the month was 9.41 inches in Red Bud, in Randolph County.
