in Marion County Court to 5 years in prison for escape, after a 10-year sentence was overturned in Appellate Court.

According to Appellate Court documents, Anthony J. Willis pleaded guilty in 2012 to a charge of felony retail theft and was sentenced to 18-months in the Illinois Department of Corrections, but was given a furlough until the following Monday to allow him time with his child and was admonished that failure to report at the given time would result in an escape charge.

Willis failed to report on the specified Monday, but did report the following Monday, on his own volition, saying he was confused as to which Monday he was to report. But the state had already charged Willis with escape and after pleading guilty to the charge at jury trial, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Willis appealed the sentence, with the Fifth Appellate Court in Mt. Vernon ultimately reversing the ruling and remanding the case back to Marion County for resentencing. Judge Mark Stedelin Tuesday resentenced Willis to 5-years in prison to be served consecutively to the retail theft sentence, and with credit for time served.
