BENTON, Ill. (AP) — The Schnucks grocery store chain has agreed to a $65,000 civil penalty in a federal investigation into its methods of dispensing prescription drugs in Illinois.

Schnuck Markets Inc. was accused of filling prescriptions written by unauthorized practitioners at several southwestern Illinois locations. Federal prosecutors on Friday announced the settlement.

U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton of the Southern District of Illinois said the prescriptions were written by “mid-level practitioners” as well as employees who were no longer licensed under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Wigginton said the company cooperated with the Drug Enforcement Administration investigation and has “made significant changes in its pharmacy practices.”

A spokesman for the St. Louis-based grocer said the company has also enhanced its training and improved its technology “to further limit such an incident in the future.”
