LOUISVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The more than century-old Clay County Courthouse in southern Illinois has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tim Jones is president of the Clay County Historical Society. The Effingham Daily News reports that it took him 13 years to get the 102-year-old courthouse on the prestigious list.

Jones says he thinks the involvement of renowned Urbana architect Joseph W. Royer was a major factor in the National Park Service approving the request to list the Louisville courthouse.

Royer designed the courthouse in Classical Revival style that was popular in the early 20th century.
