CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — The death of a 95-year-old Carbondale woman who was struck as she retrieved her mail by a car driven by a 75-year-old is being called an accident by police in southern Illinois.

Lenora Crowell died June 9 after she was hit by a car while crossing the street in front of her home of more than 50 years.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan (bit.ly/1d1jm20 ) reports the retired junior high school social studies teacher had recently renewed her own driver’s license and was an active member of the Christian Community Church in Murphysboro.

Interim Carbondale Police Chief Jeff Grubbs says the incident remains under investigation but is considered an accident.

The name of the driver, who stopped to help Crowell, has not been released. She was not arrested nor issued a ticket.
