ODIN — M. Irene Helpingstine, 103, of Odin, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015 at Odin Health Care Center in Odin. She was born March 20, 1912, the daughter of Earnest Snider and Minnie (Davis) Snider in Centralia. Irene married Ralph Helpingstine on October 31, 1930 in Carlyle. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1974.
Mrs. Helpingstine is survived by sons Laverne Helpingstine of Ina and Hurbert Helpingstine and wife Dottie of Salem; daughter Kay Smith and husband Harold of Odin; sisters Faye Shaw, Vera Marshoff, and Inez Stover all of Centralia; sister-in-laws Lela Helpingstine of Salem, Martha Helpingstine of Oglesby, and Eloise Helpingstine of Mishawaka, Indiana; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grand-children; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Ruth Dodillet, Merle Sutherland, Lucy Barton and Mable Schneider, and two great-grand-grandchildren.
Irene was a homemaker. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church for many years. Irene played the piano and taught Sunday School for 21 years. In later years she was a member of Odin First Baptist Church and was an assistant Sunday School teacher. Her hobbies were quilting, gardening, and growing flowers. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
A visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Irvin Macz Funeral Homes in Odin. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery.
