MARION COUNTY — Bail has been set at quarter-of-a-million dollars today for a 22-year-old Salem man charged with beating his pregnant girlfriend Sunday night.

Xavier Goostree was formally charged Monday morning in Marion County Court with Class 2 felony aggravated domestic battery including strangling and Class 3 felony aggravated battery of a pregnant person, for the alleged incident Sunday night at his Salem home.

According to police, they responded to a report Sunday of a pregnant woman at the Goostree home being badly beaten. After officers arrived, the woman reported that Goostree body slammed and tried to strangle her — both of which are aggravating factors – and that he allegedly threw her cellphone when she attempted to call police. She was taken to the Salem Township Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Goostree was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he remains with bail set at $250,000 or $25,000 cash bond. He’s next scheduled to appear in court July 14, for a first appearance with court appointed attorney.
