Illinois State Police accuse man of shooting at trooper

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — Illinois State Police are searching for a 52-year-old man who they accuse of firing shots at a trooper during an East St. Louis traffic stop.

Police say the incident happened at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on an Interstate 255 entrance ramp. Officials say the trooper stopped the vehicle when he suspected that a driver later identified as Gregory K. Nelson was intoxicated. The unnamed trooper asked Nelson to exit his car for a field sobriety test.

State police say at some point that Nelson pulled out a gun and fired it at the trooper. The trooper returned fire and the suspect fled on foot, running south or southeast from the scene. The trooper wasn’t injured.

Nelson was charged Wednesday with attempted first-degree murder and two weapons violations.
