CARBONDALE — Carbondale Police say an investigation into a man impersonating a police officer during a traffic stop Monday found that he was actually a police officer.
Police say he was an on-duty investigator with the Illinois Secretary of State Police, who is also a member of that department’s Hazardous Devices Unit, or “Bomb Squad.”
It was determined the investigator was in a department issued bomb squad uniform with an official badge attached to his belt, driving his department issued, unmarked silver SUV.
While traveling along West Main Street Monday, he conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in question to determine the validity of the vehicle’s registration, as the license plates were not affixed to the front or rear of the vehicle.
