SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Employment Security has released the results of the May unemployment rates and most counties experienced increases.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state in May is at 6.0 percent for the 4th month in a row. The nation’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is at 5.5 for last month, up from 5.4 in April. Last May it was at 4.7 percent. Counties in southern Illinois still have some of the highest rates in the state, especially in the far south, but all were below 7.6 percent.

The seasonally unadjusted May rate for Marion County had a slight increase to 5.7 last month from 5.6 the previous month. It was at 7.6 a year ago.

Clinton went up to 3.9 in May from 3.6 in April and it is the 4th lowest rate in the state. One year ago it was at 5.2 percent.

Jefferson County went up from 5.3 in April to 5.7 last month. It was 7.2 a year ago.

Washington County is at 3.5, for the 2nd month in a row, and it is still the 2nd lowest unemployment rate in the state.

For the month of May there were no counties over 7.5 percent and the largest increase was 0.7 percent.
