BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois woman has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges she wrapped her newborn son in a towel and plastic bag and left him in a drawer to die in 2007.
Elyse J. Mamino of Belleville was charged with the baby boy’s death the day she was paroled from an Illinois prison in 2014 for trying to drown her newborn daughter in a toilet in 2008. The (Belleville) News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1dA4oQL ) the 30-year-old woman entered the plea in the baby boy’s death on Wednesday.
She faces up to 17 years when she is sentenced Aug. 19 on counts of involuntary manslaughter and concealment of a homicidal death. Mamino is a former teacher’s aide.
The now 6-year-old baby girl survived and is in her father’s custody.
