CHICAGO (AP) — A former U.S. Marine from a Chicago suburb is accused of stealing the identities of fellow Marines to illegally procure tens of thousands of dollars from the Navy Federal Credit Union.
Twenty-four-year-old Leonard E. Parker Jr. of Calumet City is charged with financial institution fraud, aggravated identity theft and filing false claims against the United States.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced his indictment Friday. Parker’s attorney did not immediately respond to voicemails seeking comment Saturday.
Prosecutors say Parker obtained the personal information of fellow Marines while stationed at Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan.
They say he and a co-defendant used the information to transfer nearly $139,000 from the Marines’ accounts into bank accounts belonging to people they recruited into the scheme. Prosecutors say they used the funds to make purchases.
