HILLVIEW, Ill. (AP) — Floodwaters broke a levee along Hurricane Creek in southern Illinois forcing the rescue of six people in the Greene County village of Hillview.

Cale Hoesman is director of Greene County Disaster and Emergency Services. Hoesman says the floodwaters broke the levee in three places on Sunday and inundated the town of 200.

The (Alton) Telegraph reports that a stranded family of four was rescued from one house’s second-story balcony. A second family also was rescued from rushing water. More were evacuated and could use Hillview Baptist Church as a shelter. No injuries were reported.

The levee break came after 5 to 7 inches of rain fell earlier Sunday. The rains also increased the level of the already swollen Illinois River.

Hillview is about 70 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.
