WAYNE COUNTY — The Condition of Wayne White electric lineman Gerry Kinney has improved from critical to very serious, but a round of surgeries Sunday left the man without his hands.

Officials at Wayne White say Kinney underwent surgery Thursday evening, and was taken off a ventilator and was conscious.
However, Kinney underwent another round of surgeries Sunday, and due to the severity of his injuries, doctors determined it was necessary to remove both of his hands midway between his wrists and elbow.

Kinney remains in the burn unit of Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. More surgery is scheduled for later this week.

Kinney was injured last week when he came in contact with a high-voltage power line while working in remote Marion County near the Wayne County line. He was airlifted from the scene, and taken directly to the hospital in St. Louis.
