Construction worker airlifted after being struck on I-64

WASHINGTON COUNTY — The Illinois State Police District 13 reports a construction worker on Interstate 64 was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital Monday night after she was struck by a vehicle.

Reports indicate 33-year-old Jennifer L. Huels, of Carlyle, was on the ground servicing her construction machinery, when around 6:13 p.m. on Interstate 64 westbound at milepost 41, she was struck by a westbound Jeep. Huels was airlifted from the scene to St. Louis University Hospital.

The Jeep, driven by 59-year-old Henry R. Ford, of Belleville was on the westbound on-ramp just west of Route 177 when it allegedly struck Huels.

State Police Units were on scene for several hours. The cause of the accident was failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and charges are pending the results of the crash investigation.
