JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 22-year-old man wanted in Jefferson county for failing to appear in court on a case related to a fatal 2012 DUI crash has been captured in Florida.

Investigations by deputies and detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department revealed that Robert Tyler Hayes was in the Panama City, Florida area and is now in custody.

Det. Captain Scott Burge contacted members of a joint fugitive apprehension task force that was made up of local law enforcement and U.S. Marshals. The task force made contact with Hayes and was able to take him into custody. Pending an investigation, there maybe local charges in Florida against Hayes for possession of synthetic drugs.

Hayes is charged in Jefferson County with one count of driving under the influence of drugs and two counts of aggravated DUI resulting in a death for an Oct. 2012 traffic crash.

Illinois State Police said Hayes was speeding through an Interstate 64 rest area east of Mt. Vernon when he crashed into a tree. Two passengers, 24-year-old Holly Fenton, of Bluford, and 20-year-old Cody Bidabe, of Fairfield were killed. Hayes and two other passengers were injured.
