VANDALIA, Ill. (AP) — A nearly century-old building collapsed in the downtown district of the south-central Illinois city of Vandalia, severely damaging two other buildings but not injuring anyone.

The Effingham Daily News reports that Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray says the collapse happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday on Gallatin Street. Officers sent to the scene found broken power lines, the building’s roof collapsed and damage to adjoining buildings.

John Peradotti is a licensed structural engineer for the state. He responded to the collapse and says he couldn’t immediately determine the cause.

Peradotti did say the building couldn’t be repaired and would have to come down.
