SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Office of Law Enforcement will by laying off 107 employees, including 33 conservation officers — 25 of whom are military veterans.

Spokesperson Chris Young said the state is withholding a detailed breakdown explaining what and how many positions will be cut, pending notification of all affected employees and divisions.

The layoffs could leave about 34 counties in Illinois without a Conservation Officer the day before Archery Deer Season opens.

The Illinois legislature failed to approve the budget by the start of the latest fiscal year after Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner proposed cuts widely regarded as severe.

State lawmakers have kept many threatened state services operational since the budget deadline passed with gradual passage of short-term and stop-gap agreements.

On Tuesday, the Illinois Senate unanimously approved a $4.8 billion spending plan in Senate Bill 2042, which now moves to the House.
