NEW MEMPHIS — The search is over for a 26-year-old New Baden man last seen Saturday night diving off a boat and into the Kaskaskia River, as search crews located his body this afternoon.
Joshua Toennies was found approximately a quarter-mile from where he was seen Saturday night diving into the river near Illinois 160 in New Memphis.
Witnesses report that Toennies allegedly dove from a pontoon boat into the river and never resurfaced. He was with a group of friends at the time.
St. Clair County Special Emergency Services received a call around 9 p.m. Saturday for water rescue, and the Swansea Fire Department was also dispatched to assist, along with Emergency personnel from the Fayetteville Fire Department, Clinton County Emergency Management Agency and Clin-Clair Fire Protection District. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
Various underwater rescue crews have been involved as well, an emergency crew member said.
