BENTON — A 28-year-old Carbondale man was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Benton to two years in prison Thursday for his role in a drug conspiracy.

U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton says Steven Schauf was charged in an eight-count indictment for conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, use of a communications facility in aid of a controlled substance offense, possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and laundering of monetary instruments.

Wigginton says following Schauf’s prison sentence, Schauf will be on supervised release for three years. In addition, he was ordered to pay a fine of $500 and a $700 special assessment.

An Order of Forfeiture was also entered for the sum of $6,787.64, as well as a 2010 Chrysler 300. Wigginton says evidence in support of this prosecution was obtained in an investigation which was conducted under the auspices of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, which is an initiative is designed to bring federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and resources together to identify, target and dismantle large national and international drug trafficking organizations.
